Cremant de Bourgogne Rosé, Perle d'Aurore, Louis Bouillot Top Pick!
Cremant de Bourgogne Rosé, Perle d'Aurore, Louis Bouillot

This delightful Rosé sparkling wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir, and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in the individual bottle, in the champagne method. On the palate it is very rich and fruity but just off-dry on the finish. The mousse is explosive, with a very creamy palate impression. It shows just a hint of the earthiness of a Pinot Noir from Burgundy. This is charming rosé, subtle and deligh... Read More »

2006 Nicolas Potel Santenay 1er Cru " Les Gravières" Top Pick!
2006 Nicolas Potel Santenay 1er Cru " Les Gravières"

Bright and cheerful, with very pretty red fruit notes, this is simply charming. Located near the border with Chassagne Montrachet, in the best area of Santenay, this is rather Volnay-like, with fine elegant structure, pretty red and black fruit notes, and a lovely open character. This is, quite simply, charming Pinot Noir with a profound sense of place. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 02/09)

2007 Maison Joseph Drouhin Côte-de-Nuits-Villages Top Pick!
2007 Maison Joseph Drouhin Côte-de-Nuits-Villages

This has lovely fruit, and lots of charm. This is one of the real values in Burgundy today. This appellation is common to a number of villages, all situated in the Côte de Nuits region : Brochon, Fixin, Premeaux-Prissey, Corgoloin, Comblanchien. It is an interesting wine combining the different characteristics of the various "terroirs" : fairly soft and rich wines in the South to more tannic wines with a strong structure in the North. Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for this appellation.

2006 Maison Nicolas Potel Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Les Marconnets" Top Pick!
2006 Maison Nicolas Potel Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Les Marconnets"

Bright and earthy, with a long and elegant finish. Marconnets is on the border with Beaune, on the slope above Narbantons. This has a full mid-palate, with lots of fine tannins, and an elegant structure. It was vinified with partial stems, and will age beautifully, or be lovely now with an hour in the decanter. Dark berry fruit notes balance the earthy and structured nature of the wine. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 07/09)

2004 Domaine Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Ursules" (Was $50 Elsewhere)

Of the 2004s I have tried recently this was nothing short of truly impressive and lovely. Quite frankly, it's delicious and a terrific value. And at 30% off the original price, it won't be around for long. The focused black fruit notes are followed by a long and spicy finish. It is just starting to develop elegant secondary aromas, with some notes of sous bois. No trace of the dreaded "Green Meanies" in this wine! Domaine Voarick Cremant de Bourgogne (was $16.99)
Domaine Voarick Cremant de Bourgogne (was $16.99)

This delightful sparkling wine, made in Burgundy, in the traditional Champagne method, is composed of the traditional champagne varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. When grown on the limestone soils of the Cote Challonaise and the Cote de Beaune, these varietals produce a sparkling wine of brightness, with fine bubbles and a lovely finish. If you love champagne, but are trying to keep down costs (or simply enjoy it more often, without breaking the bank), this is one you must try. 2006 Domaine René Leclerc Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ($83 elsewhere)
2006 Domaine René Leclerc Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ($83 elsewhere)

90-92 points Allen Meadows' Burghound: "Very mild reduction can't begin to suppress the elegant, airy and refined extract of red pinot fruit nose that merges seamlessly into rich and relatively full flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that firms up moderately on the sappy and mouth coating finish. This is pretty rather than truly profound though if it can add a bit more depth with time in bottle, that may change. For the moment however, this appears to possess very good to excellent potential." I didn't find the reductive notes that Burghound notic... Read More »

90 points Wine Spectator: "Intense aromas of mineral, wild berry and black currant mark this firm, tensile red. Its tannins are present and balanced by a sweetness midpalate. Fine, lingering aftertaste." (Bruce Sanderson, Web Only, 03/08) K&L's notes: This charming Pinot Noir comes from the village of Marsannay. It has bright cherry fruit, brambly notes of red and black fruits, and drinks very nicely today, although a few years in the cellar will tame it even more. 2005 Domaine Desertaux-Ferrand Côte-de-Nuits-Villages Vieilles Vignes

This delightful Côte de Nuits-Villages displays the advantage of buying Burgundy from the less fashionable areas. It is rich, full bodied and has a long finish, with pronounced blackberry fruit notes. This is an extraordinary buy at this price. Although the wine comes from the village of Corgolin, it works with the supple and charming character of the vintage to produce a charming, rich wine for current drinking. It shows ripe fruit and lots of charm, along with a floral note. The finish has a note of black fruit and an interesting spice. This is a favo... Read More »

When you visit this vineyard, it is most impressive to see the gnarled 100-year-old vines in this vineyard. You can alwys tell a really ancient vine, for it shows where it was sawed through to shorten it so tractors could clear it, as the change from horses proceeded! (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer) Lucien Camus is one of the rising stars in the Côte de Beaune, making wine from vineyard holdings in Savigny-Les-Beaune, Pommard and Beaune. Lovely and rich, this is delightful Pinot Noir from Moillard. They are now working with Pascal Marchand as their consulting winemaker, growing their grapes organically and biodynamically, and the quality has come up terrifically. (Ketih Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer) The winery says: "The vineyard of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is on the plateau above the Cote de Nuits, at an altitude of 300 to 400 meters. The Craipillot vineyard lies just below Lavaux St. Jacques, and next to Champonnet. Clive Coates calls it 'the obscure (I have never seen an example) Craipillot'. Well, here is a rare chance to try this vineyard! The vines are from 75 to 100 years old, and the wine clearly reflects this. Focused, balanced and made in an entirely elegant style, this has a pretty cherry and strawberry nose. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins and good mineral persistence. This has turned out very well." (Mar/Apr 09) According to Burghound: "Here the nose displays the most wood of any of these Beaune 1ers though it stops short of being intrusive to the ... Read More »

Burghound writes: "An exuberant red berry fruit and subtle warm earth infused nose introduces transparent and attractively minerally middle weight flavors that are balanced, vibrant and persistent. This is really a lovely effort crafted in a distinctly understated style. Worth a look." (01/09)

2006 Maison Joseph Drouhin Savigny-lès-Beaune (was $32.)
2006 Maison Joseph Drouhin Savigny-lès-Beaune (was $32.)

Fermentation occurs in open wooden or stainless steel fermenters. The total maceration generally lasts 15 to 18 days. The wine is kept in barrels for 18 months before bottling. Savigny-les-Beaune is a delicate and elegant wine showing intriguing spicy notes as well as wild berries. The spicy character is typical to that area. On the palate, the wine has considerable finesse and elegance. It develops harmoniously between 3 to 10 years of age. As its close neighbor, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny goes very well with the simplest cuisine or the typical bistro... Read More »

Allen Meadows writes: "An interesting nose that combines intense and pretty floral aromas with pungent Savigny earth that continues onto the rich, rustic and sweet middle weight flavors that are robust, powerful and punchy. This won’t win any awards for elegance but there will be no accusations of it being a wimpy wine!" (Burghound, 01/07)

2006 Domaine Rebourseau Chambertin Grand Cru (Was $225)
2006 Domaine Rebourseau Chambertin Grand Cru (Was $225)

Our notes: "There are a total of only 5 barrels of this wine made. It comes from 48 year old vines, in two parcels, one near Beze and one in the center of Chambertin. It is more masculine in character than the Charmes, and even more so than the Mazis. On the palate it is dark and concentrated. It is young, brooding, and reicent, with lots of life ahead of it. " (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer) The holdings of this 13.6-hectare domaine are spectacular, with an incredible 7 hectares of grands crus, including 2.1 hectares in Clos de Vougeot, Cha... 2006 Domaine Jean Tardy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Chaumes" (Was $75)

88-90 points Allen Meadows: "A classic, and notably fresh, Vosne nose replete with very ripe and highly spiced black pinot fruit with nuances of soy and hoisin that continue onto the round, suave, supple and attractively stylish medium weight flavors blessed with more sophisticated tannins though this packs a punch and is relatively robust on the solidly long finish. If there is a nit, it's that at present this is not only complex but the material is at least here to possibly develop that with a few years in bottle." (Jan 01, 2008) This wine comes from v...
